shin-puh-kan centre - Richard Rogers Partnership Japan In 1999, Richard Rogers Partnership was commissioned to design a relatively low-budget building as part of the renovation of an old telephone exchange. The brief called for retail area plus offices and restaurants. The design aspiration was to create a successful fusion of old and new, sensitively transforming a disused building into a vibrant public amenity. The shopping centre is three storeys high. The old building is complemented by a new wing which together creates an urban square. The centre of the courtyard is designed to accommodate a variety of events and performances. The courtyard can be radically increased by using the gallery area as additional audience space. Materials utilised are a simple steel frame structure that is durable and low-maintenance. Prior to establishing 'atelier-bill' Architects the Principal Architect enjoyed the good fortune to work in the studio of RRPJ in Tokyo, which afforded the opportunity to explore some of the most progressive Modern Japanese Architecture. shin-pun-kan
